Things to do near the cabin
Marblemount is the western gateway to North Cascades National Park — one of the wildest, least-crowded parks in the country. Here's how we'd spend a few days.
North Cascades National Park
From the cabin, the gravel Cascade River Road climbs about an hour to the Cascade Pass trailhead — switchbacks into a cirque of glaciers and wildflowers, one of the most jaw-dropping day hikes in the state. Bring layers; weather turns fast at elevation.
Highway 20 & Diablo Lake
Head east on the North Cascades Highway (about 40 minutes) to the Diablo Lake Overlook and its surreal turquoise water, plus Gorge Creek Falls and the little hydro town of Newhalem. An easy, stunning afternoon drive.
On the river
The river is right out the door — perfect for morning coffee by the water, fishing, or cooling off in summer. The Skagit and Sauk nearby are classic Northwest float and steelhead waters.
Bald eagles in winter
From December through February, hundreds of bald eagles gather along the Skagit River to feed. The stretch around Rockport and Marblemount is one of the best eagle-watching spots in the lower 48.
More hikes
Beyond Cascade Pass: Sauk Mountain for big ridge-top views, Thornton Lakes near Newhalem, and the old-growth loops at Rockport State Park for an easy forest stroll.
Seasons & getting here
We're about 2.5 hours from Seattle. Summer and fall are prime for hiking; winter is quiet and great for eagles and the hot tub. Note that Highway 20 east of Ross Lake closes for winter (roughly November–April), so plan that scenic drive for the warmer months.
Good to know before you come
Marblemount has a small general store and gas, but it's limited — stock up on groceries in Burlington or Concrete on the way in. Cell service is spotty in the park (the cabin has Wi-Fi). A Northwest Forest Pass / America the Beautiful pass is handy for some trailheads. Always check current road and trail conditions with the Marblemount Ranger Station before heading out.
Make it your basecamp
Settle in, then explore the North Cascades right from the door.
